Mastering the Art of Pouring: How to Achieve Stunning Wave Effects with Perfect Paints
Hello Becky Conley here! Welcome to my very first project as part of the amazing Perfect Paints 2024-2025 Design Team! I am thrilled to embark on this creative journey with you, where every splash and swirl of color promises to be an unforgettable experience. Pouring paint is not just an artistic technique; it's an exhilarating exploration of mixology and composition that invites both novice and seasoned artists to unleash their inner creativity. With each pour, we dive into a world brimming with endless possibilities and innovative techniques, resulting in stunning visuals that captivate the imagination. Join me as we unravel the magic of pouring paint, turning simple supplies into breathtaking masterpieces that are sure to inspire!
Perfect Paints Supplies:
Shimmering Acrylics:
Other products
16 x 20 Canvas
Water
Floetrol
white craft paint - thinned with water and tinted with ink and metallic pigments
spray sealant
PC and transparency film for the quote
mixing utensils and a hair dryer w/ attachment
heat tool or embossing gun, small paint brush if desired.
Preparing the mediums:
The "pillow", or the background paint was a plain, inexpensive white acrylic which was quite thick. To bring it into a pouring consistency, I thinned it with water and added Floetrol. (Floetrol is an additive for paint that extends drying time, provides a gloss sheen and if using a brush, will reduce brush marks.)
I also tinted the pillow with Ranger Ink Stream Color wash and added metallic and pearl pigment powders.
The Perfect Paints are so brilliant! I only needed to thin them a bit with water and add Flotrol to keep the sheen of the project consistent, 1:1 ratio after thinning. Different consistencies in your different colors will cause different reactions, movement and possible cells to appear like magic.
In addition to the four Perfect Paints Shimmering Matte Acrylics, I mixed up a white with gold metallic pigment using the same formula of thinning with water and adding Flotrol.
The entire canvas will be covered with the "pillow" color as evenly as possible and even tilting a bit or pushing the paint over the edges. Use a heat tool briefly over the surface to eliminate any air bubbles.
Then, each color is poured in a line along the chosen shape or path.
I started at the bottom left and curved up around the right, as seen in the images.
Pour each color on the path multiple time, overlapping the other colors poured.
Apply the heat tool again if more bubbles have appeared.
Using a blow dryer on cool setting, with attachment, blow the colored lines of paint out into the pillow in both directions, coming up and out as far as desired and also off the canvas, if desired.
You can add more paint if you want more of a certain color in a specific area and blow it out again.
Be mindful if the paint starts to react differently, it may be thickening and your play time is almost up. Be careful not to move the paint after it begins to set.
Create additional wisps and twirls on the edges of your waves by dragging the handle of a paint brush to the outer edges.
It's not so practical to stop this process for step photos, as your hands and work area may be covered in paint. But I'll be better prepared for the next one, or have help available :o)
There is a complete 25 minute video of this project below.
I attached a quote printed on transparency film and glued before the final spray seal.
"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples"
- Mother Teresa
I hope you enjoyed this project and will try experimenting with paint pouring. You'll absolutely LOVE the shimmer of Perfect Paints Shimmering Matte Acrylics in your creations.
